Mistral Large 4 Explained Simply: Europe’s Big New AI Model and Why It Matters at Work

By the Airtics Education team. Last updated 10 October 2026.
In short: Mistral AI, a company based in Paris, released a preview of its biggest AI model yet, Mistral Large 4, on 6 October 2026. The big news is that Mistral plans to make it “open weight” by the end of October, which means companies could run it on their own computers. Below: what that means in everyday terms, why your company might care, how to try Mistral’s AI and which skills this calls for.
Most AI news comes from the United States. This one comes from Europe, and it touches on a question more and more companies are asking: “Can we use powerful AI without sending our data to someone else’s servers?”
What happened
Mistral AI announced Mistral Large 4, which it nicknames “le Chonk”, on 6 October 2026 (Mistral announcement). It is a preview for now. Developers can use it through Mistral’s developer platform, and Mistral says the full model will be released for anyone to download by the end of the month.

“Open weights”, explained with food
Think of an AI model as a dish.
- With most well-known AI tools, such as ChatGPT, you eat at the restaurant. You get a great meal, but the recipe stays in their kitchen, and your order (your data) goes to them.
- With an open-weight model, the company hands you the recipe. You can cook it in your own kitchen: run it on your company’s own computers, adjust it to your needs and keep your data in-house.
Mistral Large 4 is not open yet. The download page on Hugging Face, a popular site for sharing AI models, shows it as an “Upcoming release” with an expected date of 31 October 2026 (Hugging Face). Mistral has also not yet said under which terms the model will be shared, so companies should check that before planning to use it.

How big is it? A hospital analogy
Mistral says the model has about 1 trillion “parameters”. You can think of parameters as the tiny settings the AI adjusted while it learned. More settings usually means it can handle more complex work.
Here is the clever part. Mistral uses a design called “mixture of experts”. Picture a large hospital with hundreds of specialists. When a patient arrives, only the few doctors who are needed see them. In the same way, only around 50 billion of the trillion settings are used for each piece of text, which keeps the model fast despite its size.

A few more facts from Mistral, in plain terms:
- It understands images as well as text, so it can read a chart or a scanned document.
- It can take in very long documents, up to around a million “tokens” (small chunks of words).
- It was trained on more than 160 languages, including every official EU language.
- It was built in Europe, on Mistral’s own data centres, and Mistral offers a version run entirely under European law.
Why your company might care
| If your company… | Why an open model is interesting |
|---|---|
| Handles sensitive data (banking, health, government) | It could run the AI on its own servers, so private data never leaves. |
| Works with European partners | Where data is processed, and under which rules, is becoming part of everyday contracts. |
| Operates in many languages | A model trained on many languages can help with customer service and documents across markets. |
| Wants AI that knows its own business | With the “recipe” in hand, an AI team can train the model further on company documents. |
Try Mistral’s AI yourself
- For everyday use, open Mistral’s chat assistant, Le Chat, on the web or in its mobile app. Note that Mistral has not said whether Large 4 is the model behind Le Chat, so treat it as a way to get to know Mistral’s AI in general.
- If you or a technical colleague want to test the new model itself, Mistral says the preview is available in Mistral Studio, its platform for developers.
- Try this simple comparison: ask the same question to Le Chat, ChatGPT and Claude, for example “Summarise the main points of this policy in five bullet points for a new employee” (paste a non-confidential document).
- Compare the three answers. Which one is clearest? Which one missed something? Which one added things that were not in the document?
Why this exercise matters: no AI is right all the time. Getting into the habit of comparing and checking answers is one of the most valuable AI skills you can have at work.
Reading the scoreboard
AI companies like to publish test scores, called benchmarks. Think of them as exam results in one subject: useful, but not the whole picture. Mistral is open about this. It says the model is still improving and that more results will come with the final release.

In Mistral’s own chart for a coding test, other models score higher. An independent site, Artificial Analysis, rates the preview 38 on its intelligence index for now (Artificial Analysis). When you read about any AI model, it helps to ask: who ran the test, what did it measure, and does it match what I need?
The skills behind it, and where you can build them
Open models create real jobs inside companies: someone has to set them up, feed them the right data, keep them secure and decide where they should and should not be used. Airtics programmes cover these skills, and you can study them online or blended while you keep working:
| If you want to… | Look at |
|---|---|
| Understand data and AI from the ground up | Mastering Python for Data Science (3 months, beginner level) or Postgraduate Certificate in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (6 months, online) |
| Run AI and data systems in the cloud | MSc Data Engineering & Cloud Computing (awarded by aivancity, Paris) |
| Decide how company data is governed and used | Master’s in Data Management, Business Analytics & AI (awarded by ESIC, Spain) |
| Work with language and documents | Postgraduate Certificate in Natural Language Processing |
| Build and adapt AI models | Master in AI & Machine Learning (awarded by UCAM, Spain) |

Frequently asked questions
What does “open weight” mean?
It means the company shares the trained model itself, so others can download it and run it on their own computers. With closed tools such as ChatGPT, you use the AI through the company’s service instead.
When will Mistral Large 4 be available to download?
Mistral says by the end of October 2026, and the Hugging Face page gives an expected date of 31 October 2026. Until then it is a preview available to developers through Mistral Studio.
What is “le Chonk”?
It is Mistral’s nickname for Mistral Large 4.
Can I try Mistral’s AI without coding?
Yes. Mistral’s chat assistant, Le Chat, works on the web and on mobile. Mistral has not said whether Large 4 is the model behind Le Chat; the new model itself is in preview on Mistral Studio, which is aimed at developers.
Why would a company run AI on its own computers?
Mainly to keep sensitive data in-house, to meet rules about where data is processed and to adapt the AI to its own documents and language.
